In general, Japanese whisky, while delicious is overpriced and not the best value. As their whisky goes on ships and matures in barrels on the ocean, they also can’t be labeled a true Japanese whisky, but the whisky is Japanese distillate, no sourced whisky. They have a cask strength option that runs ~$80. Kaiyo is an up and coming Japanese distillery that is pretty solid value. NftB contains a very small amount of scotch so it can’t be labeled a true Japanese whisky but it’s mostly Japanese distillate and it’s delicious. There are a lot of “fake” Japanese whiskies out there, and by “fake” I mean whiskies that aren’t distilled in Japan.Īnything by Suntory or Nikka is reputable, Suntory Toki and Nikka Days are cheaper but generally better for highballs, something in the $80-150 range for you would be Nikka from the Barrel (my #1 recommendation for you, as it’s cask strength), followed by Hibiki Harmony (a great blend of Japanese whiskies - mostly Yamazaki and Hakushu), Nikka Miyagikyo and Nikka Yoichi. Nikka sells two single malts from their two distilleries, Yoichi ($110) and Miyagikyo ($110) I like the Miyagikyo which is unpeated, but the Yoichi is peated a little too heavily for my personal taste.įinally, Akashi is also a real Japanese distillery but I am not familiar with most of their offerings.Įdit: If you want to try a Mizunara oak bomb to get a real sense of that flavor, Irish whiskey Glendalough sells a 13 year Mizunara whiskey which is extremely strong on the Mizunara, off-putting to me personally, but gives you a great sense of the flavor note you will find in many Japanese whiskies which use that rare wood to age/finish their whiskies. Nikka from the Barrel ($100) and Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt ($85) are also excellent blends. The Coffey Malt is excellent at about $75, and is a blended malt from Nikka don't be fooled by the name Coffey, that does not refer to coffee but instead to the guy who invented the column still they use.

Nikka is another of my favorite Japanese distilleries and was founded by one of Suntory's employees Masataka Taketsuru who decided to go out on his own and start a competitor. Their 18's are even better but as you can imagine are creeping into four figure territory these days. If you have the opportunity I highly recommend Yamazaki 12 ($250), which is the flagship whisky from Suntory's oldest distillery in Japan (unpeated), or Hakushu 12 ($200), which is from Suntory's newer mountain distillery and is very delicately peated.

Suntory is the oldest distillery in Japan and was heavily influenced by Scotch techniques, but reinvented for a more delicate Japanese palate. Toki ($30, cheap blend) or Hibiki ($90, good blend) are good starters and introduce you to the Mizunara oak note characteristic of some of the real whiskies. I personally recommend anything by Suntory. I'll put price estimates for So Cal, where you are may vary.

Unfortunately even the reputable stores (Costco, Sams Club, Total Wine) are full of them now, with the "Japanese whisky" section having about 10 fakes for every real one. OP, /u/whiskytrails has a good comment about avoiding fake Japanese whiskies.
